ヤンバルマイマイは、やんばるのイタジイ林にのみ生息します。殻の径が35mm以上になる大型のカタツムリです。林床や、木の幹の地上近くなどで活動している事が多いです。なお沖縄島の中南部には、以前は亜種関係とされていたシュリマイマイが分布しています。

Satsuma atrata is endemic species of the North part of Okinawa Island. Diameter of the shell is about 35mm. The main habitat of this snail is forest of the mountain.
