ホオグロヤモリは、奄美大島以南の琉球列島、小笠原諸島に分布しています。熱帯から亜熱帯に広く分布しているようです。物資の移動など人為的な要因で分布を広げているようで、そもそもの原産地がはっきりしないようです。琉球列島でも外来種であると考えられていますが、いつごろ入ってきたのか不明です。人家、平地の荒れ地、御嶽林、公園、城跡の樹林などに生息しています。ケッケッケッと人家などで鳴いているヤモリは、このホオグロヤモリです。全長10cm程度で、尻尾に棘上の小さな突起があるのが特徴です。ただしこの突起は、一度切れて再生した尾にはありません。
House gecko ( Hemidactylus frenatus ) is distributed in the Ogasawara Islands and the Ryukyu Islands south of Amami Oshima. It is widely distributed from the tropics to the subtropics. It is an alien species in the Ryukyu Islands. It inhabits private houses and forests on flat land. The total length is about 10 cm, and there is a small protrusion on the spine on the tail.
