ハマビワ ( クスノキ科 ) Litsea japonica

ハマビワは高さ数メートルになる小高木です。雌雄異株で、写真の木は雄花を咲かせていました。本州中部以南、琉球列島などに分布するようです。花はやんばるの海岸崖地で秋に撮影しました。市街地周辺でも石灰岩の崖地に生育しているのを見かけます。同じく海岸付近などで見かけるアカテツに似ていますが、ハマビワは葉に光沢がありません。

Litsea japonica is a small tree reaching several meters in height. The species is dioecious, and the tree shown in the photograph was bearing male flowers. It is distributed from central and southern Honshu to the Ryukyu Archipelago. The flowers were photographed in autumn on coastal cliffs in the Yanbaru region. The species can also be found growing on limestone cliffs around urban areas.
