ヤエヤマオオコウモリはクビワオオコウモリ Pteropus dasymallus の一亜種で、八重山諸島に分布しています。なおオリイオオコウモリが沖縄諸島、エラブオオコウモリが口永良部島、ダイトウオオコウモリが大東諸島に分布しています。頭胴長約20～25cmです。洞窟に住む小型のコウモリとは異なり、目視で行動する大型のコウモリです。
一般的な習性は、オリイオオコウモリと同じであると思われます。夜行性で、昼間は樹木にぶら下がるなどして休息しています。果実を食べます。

Yaeyama flying fox ( Pteropus dasymallus yayeyamae ) is distributed in the Yaeyama Islands. Another subspecies P. d. dasymallus distributed in Kuchierabujima and Tokara Islands, P. d. inopinatus distributed in Okinawa Islands, P. d. daitoensis distributed in Daitou Islands. Head and body length is around 20cm from 25cm. It hangs on trees during the day and rests, and it will be active at night. It mainly eats the fruit of trees.
