オキナワマルバネクワガタは沖縄島北部と久米島に分布しています。オスの体長は4cm強から最大で7cm、メスは4cmから5cm強になるようです。私はまだ最大級のオスを撮影した事がありません。オスは体長により大顎の形状か異なります。成虫は8月下旬から10月ごろに発生します。幼虫はオキナワジイ（スダジイ、イタジイ）などの樹洞で生育します。そのため大木が生育している、自然性が高い森林に生息しています。採集圧が高かったこともあり現在では国内希少野生動植物種に指定されており採集などが禁止されています。

Neolucanus okinawanus is distributed in the northern part of Okinawa Island and on Kumejima Island. Males range in body length from just over 4 cm to a maximum of about 7 cm, while females are typically between 4 cm and slightly over 5 cm. I have not yet had the opportunity to photograph a truly maximum-sized male. In males, the shape of the mandibles varies depending on body size. Adults emerge from late August to around October. The larvae develop inside tree hollows of large trees such as Castanopsis sieboldii ssp. lutchuensis. For this reason, the species inhabits highly natural forests with well-grown large trees. Due in part to heavy collecting pressure in the past, it is now designated as a National Endangered Species in Japan, and collecting is strictly prohibited.
