ベンケイガは、関東以西、琉球列島、台湾などに分布しています。陸生のカニで、甲幅が3cmちょっとあり、個体差がありますが甲羅の色は赤色をしています。平地の河川沿い、海岸付近の湿った場所、マングローブ林周辺などに生息しています。クロベンケイガニと同じ場所に生息している事があります。地面に穴を掘ったり、小さな小川の古い石積みの隙間などに潜り込んでいます。身近な場所でみられるカニのひとつです。
Sesarmops intermedia is distributed west of the Kanto region, the Ryukyu Islands, and Taiwan. The width of the shell is about 3 cm. It inhabits flat rivers, moist areas near the coast, and around mangrove forests. It is a crab that can be seen in familiar places.
