ゴイサギは全長57cm。沖縄では冬鳥又は一部が留鳥とし繁殖します。河川、水路、湿地などに生息します。昼間は周辺の林などで休息しており、主に夜間活動します。グワッと夜鳴くため「ユーガラサー：夜カラス」の方言名がついています。平家物語に後醍醐天皇から正五位の位を授かったとあり”ゴイ”サギの和名があります。
